Mindless Snacking At Work

Question:

My body craves snacks like cookies and chips whenever I’m stressed out at work -- I can easily finish a whole packet of chocolate cookies in one go! The eating does calm me down but I also feel guilty. How can I put a stop to my snacking habit?


When we’re stressed, many of us turn to food for comfort. This is because certain foods, such as those high in carbohydrates, release “feel-good” chemicals like serotonin in the brain and produce a mood-lifting effect. This is why comfort eating can be so addictive.

Eat Breakfast
To beat stress, do eat a healthy breakfast each morning. When we wake up, our body's sugar level gets exhausted. If it's not replenished, you will feel weak and irritable. Nutrition experts recommend generous portions of high-fiber wholemeal cereals or bread that will help keep you full longer.

Get Stress-Fighting Vitamins
Vitamin B-complex is important to the nervous system, while vitamin C boosts the immune system. Together, they help the body to better manage stress so do load up on these vitamins. Foods rich in Vitamin B include whole grains, poultry, meat, eggs, dairy products and leafy green vegetables. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits and dark green vegetables.

Snack on Fruits
Lastly, stop stocking up on those high-carbohydrate snacks. This way, you won't have the temptation right in front of you. Instead, keep a handful of fruits such as apples and pears around your work desk. Munching on fresh fruits are a much healthier alternative.
