Q&A

Should You Eat Before Morning Exercise?

Question:

What should I eat before I workout in the morning? Or is it better to exercise on an empty stomach?

Some studies have shown that if you don't eat before you exercise, you're more likely to burn body fat -- a bonus. But if you feel hungry and sluggish, this can translate into a weaker workout, which defeats the purpose.

There are no hard and fast rules. Some people need a little food in their system before they workout; others feel great when they exercise on an empty stomach. Do whichever feels best for your body.

If you're going to eat before your workout, fuel up with a small amount of carbs and protein -- just a simple snack that contains 100 to 200 calories will do. Some good pre-workout choices include:

  • A small glass of juice and a boiled egg
  • A few crackers and a small banana
  • A piece of toast with peanut butter
  • A bagel with light cream cheese
  • A small cup of yogurt
  • A piece of fruit and a handful of nuts

After hitting the gym, keep in mind to refuel your body by eating a healthy, solid breakfast.
