3. Read labels

You'll spot little clues about the food product by paying a little more attention to its ingredient list. "In general, the shorter the ingredient list, the less processed and more wholesome the food," notes Steven A. Schnur, M.D., author of The Reality Diet. Also avoid products that contain hydrogenated oils, artificial flavors, and colors, stabilizers, preservatives, high amounts of fat, sodium and/or refined sugars.

For breads, crackers and cereals, look for 'whole wheat' high up in the ingredients. "Try whole-wheat pasta and couscous as well -- they're far more nutritious than the refined wheat variety, and once you add vegetables and sauce to them, it's hard to tell the difference," adds Schnur.
