Stroke is often thought of as a disease that strikes only the elderly, but the rate is increasing among those in their 50s, 40s and even younger. Globally, it's the fifth leading cause of death in people aged 15 to 59 years old, according to the World Heart Federation.

"The good news, is that quickly recognizing the signs of stroke and seeking immediate medical care from stroke specialists can minimize the effects of the disease or even save a life," says Patrick D. Lyden, MD, chair of Neurology and director of the Stroke Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

So what are the symptoms of stroke? If you see any one of these five sudden, severe symptoms, call for emergency help regardless of the victims's age:

  1. Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg on one side of the body.
  2. Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding.
  3. Sudden trouble seeing on one side.
  4. Sudden, severe difficulty walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
  5. Sudden, severe headache with no known cause.


Time is of the essence

A stroke requires immediate action to improve the odds against disability and death. Treated early, it is possible to stop a stroke in progress and even reverse damage, hence quickly recognizing these signs and getting medical help ASAP makes all the difference between life and death.
