Body Odor Cures

Keep those less-than-fresh smells at bay with these solutions.

3. Mouth

Chronic bad breath, also known as halitosis, is commonly due to decaying food particles in the mouth, which react with oral bacteria to produce offensive-smelling sulfur compounds. Poor oral hygiene can lead to tooth decay and gum disease, both of which can also contribute to halitosis. In addition, the odor of pungent foods such as garlic and onions can linger in your system for hours, making your breath reek.

Fresh Fix: Maintaining good oral hygiene is key. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. Brushing your tongue every time you brush your teeth helps get rid of bacteria and keep bad breath at bay. If pungent foods are the culprit, cutting back on them will solve the problem. If you have red, swollen or bleeding gums, you may have gingivitis -- visit your dentist to have it treated.

4. Vagina

It's normal for your vagina to have a musky odor, and every woman has a unique, natural vaginal scent. But if you notice an unusually foul smell, it may signal that the delicate balance of the vaginal environment is upset. The most common infection to cause an offensive odor is bacterial vaginosis, though any infection can make your vaginal scent unpleasant. Look out for any abnormal discharge: A green or grayish discharge could indicate trichomoniasis while cottage cheese-like discharge may signal an yeast infection.

Fresh Fix: Wear light, cotton undies that allow air to circulate. When it comes to cleansing, simply wash your vagina with water or mild soap. There's no need to get obsessed with hygiene -- douching, frequent use of pantyliners and excessive washing can make the genital area sensitive and up your risk for vaginal infections. If you suspect an infection, check with your doctor who will prescribe medication to clear up the infection.
