2. Multi-grain breads

If you pick up a mult-grain bread thinking you're getting 100% whole grain, think again. 'Multi-grain' is just a term for a variety of grains blended together. "The term misleads consumers into buying a product that they assume is whole grain when it is not," explains health, nutrition and fitness expert Dr. Janet Bond Brill (PHD, RD). So, how can you tell what kind of bread you're actually buying? Check the packaging, says Palinski, and see if whole grains such as 'whole wheat' or 'whole oats' are listed as the main ingredients. If you see 'wheat flour' or 'refined flour' instead, put it back.
