Vaginal Yeast Infection

Learn more about candidiasis – the second most common cause of vaginal irritation.
Vaginal yeast infections are so common that 3/4 of women will have it at some point in their lives. In fact, 1 in 2 women will have more than one infection in their lives. Learn how to prevent and treat vaginal yeast infections - the second most common cause of vaginal irritation (vaginitis).

What is a Vaginal Yeast Infection?

Vaginal yeast infections (vaginal candidiasis) are caused by a fungus called Candida albicans. Yeast organisms are normally found in small amounts in the vagina, the mouth, the digestive tract, and on the skin without causing disease or symptoms.

The acidic environment of the vagina helps keep yeast from over-growing. When the pH level inside the vagina is changed, balance between the normal microorganisms of the vagina can be upset. When the yeast population multiplies uncontrollably and gets out of balance with the other "normal flora", symptoms of yeast infection can result.

What Causes Change in Vaginal pH?

The acidic balance of the vagina can be changed by your monthly period, pregnancy, diabetes mellitus, some antibiotics, birth control pills and steroids, leading to an increased incidence of yeast infections. Moisture and irritation of the vagina also seem to encourage yeast to grow.
