Back Pain, Aches & Injuries at Work

Understanding what causes workplace backaches and how to avoid them.

How to Avoid Back Injuries

Lifestyle

Having a healthy weight for your body's frame minimizes stress on your back. To maintain your weight within the healthy range, diet and exercise are two important aspects you should not neglect, no matter how busy your schedules are.

  • Diet. Be mindful of what you eat: Avoid food that are deep-fried, preserved and processed as these tend to be high in fat, cholesterol, salt and sugar. Instead, include more fresh fruits and vegetables as well as wholegrain foods into your diet.

  • Exercise. You can also strengthen your back by exercising regularly. Regular exercise helps you stay fit by strengthening your muscles as well as increasing your flexibility.

  • Some amount of stress is inevitable on the job. However, if you constantly experience high levels of stress, not only does it have a negative impact on your emotional wellbeing, it can also make you more susceptible to back injuries due to muscle tension. Therefore, learning to cope with work pressure can help you manage back pain more effectively.

  • Stress Management. Try to minimize your stress levels both at work and at home. During times of stress, you can cope with deep-breathing exercises, confide in your spouse or a trusted friend, or sweat it all out with a good workout.
