Boost Your Baby's Immunity!

3 things you can do to protect your infant against infections.
Young infants' immune systems are still immature, which means they're more vulnerable to infections. The good news is there are a lot you can do to give your baby's immune system a boost. Here's how:

1. Breastfeed for as long as you can

Breast milk is loaded with antibodies and studies have found that breast milk protects against everything from ear infections and allergies to diarrhea and pneumonia. You'll give your baby's immune system a good headstart through nursing -- it's one key reason why the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusvie breastfeeding for at least 6 months. The colostrum (the thick, yellowish fluid you produce immediately after birth) is especially rich with proteins that fight germs, so nurse for as long as you can, even if you can only do it for two weeks.

2. Feed him with immune-boosting foodst

Once your baby starts eating solids at 4 to 6 months, you can begin introducing immune-boosting foods. Go for antioxidant- and vitamin-rich foods -- fresh fruits and vegetables such as sweet potatoes and spinach are great sources. Do go for variety: Try to include a "rainbow" of fruits and veggies to ensure a diverse amount of essential nutrients.

One caveat, however. You should avoid fresh carrots, beets, collard greens, spinach and turnips until your baby is 6 months -- these veggies contain high levels of nitrates, which can be dangerous for infants.

3. Give her regular massages

The regular infant rubdown can help boost her immunity. Studies have shown that giving babies massage reduces the production of the stress hormone cortisol. Experts believe that less cortisol is linked to increased levels of disease-fighting cells within the body. Try giving a ten-minute massage at bedtime -- use a little baby oil and a firm, gentle touch.
