Expressed Milk: Breastfeeding for Working Mothers

Guide to expressing and storing breast milk.
Expressing breast milk

1. Expressing by hand

To encourage milk flow, start by massaging around the breast in a circular motion with your fingertips. When expressing breast milk, place the forefinger and thumb on the areola (the dark area around the nipple), then press back firmly against your breast and squeeze gently. Rotate your fingers around the breast and repeat the process. It is best to compress your breast in a rhythmic manner when expressing milk.

2. Expressing by breast pump

It is advisable to ask a lactation consultant or physician for assistance and recommendations before purchasing a breast pump, as not every pump works for every woman.

If you are getting a hand pump, the piston-type pump is recommended because it allows you control over the suction. Ensure that the flange of the pump is placed over the areola to achieve a complete seal, just as your baby's mouth would when he is feeding.

If you are using battery-operated or electric pumps, remember to start with minimum power before increasing to the desired intensity. Fully automated electric pumps and those that allow for double pumping reduces pumping time and promotes milk production.
