Third Stage: Placenta Delivery

After giving birth, your uterus begins to contract again. These contractions help separate the placenta from the walls of the uterus. With pushing, the placenta can be expelled with relative ease. The delivery of the placenta is usually not painful.

After your placenta has been delivered, your provider will examine the placenta to ensure that you haven't retained any remnants inside your womb. She will also make sure that your uterus has contracted sufficiently to decrease uterine bleeding.

You can start breastfeeding now if you feel up to it and your baby is willing.
