6 Tips to Raising Well-Behaved Kids

Child-development experts share which discipline strategies really work (and which backfire).
Parenting is no walk in the park, especially on the days when your little angel decides to act like a brat. Relax! Here, child-development experts share six parenting tips you need to know about tackling tantrums, discipline do's and don'ts and raising really nice kids.

1. It's never too early to set the ground rules for good behavior.

In fact, by the time they're one year old, children are able to comprehend the concept of cause (i.e. behavior) and effect (i.e. consequence, like reward or punishment). But because toddlers have limited language skills and short attention spans, keep your message short and to-the-point, rather than lengthy. For example, when she sits too near the TV, there's no point going into a discussion about how sitting too near the set can hurt her eyesight – simply saying "no" then moving her back will help her make the connection.

2. Give praise for good behavior.

Praising provides positive reinforcement that's really effective in motivating children to behave well. This boosts their self-esteem and is one of the best way to foster good qualities in children. Your verbal encouragements work to give your child a sense of pride about his deeds, so don't forget to praise him whenever he shares, follows your rules or waits for his turn.
