Month 3 (Week 12)
The baby loses its tail, moves on from the embryo stage and is now called a fetus. The fetus measures about 6.5 to 7.5 cm (2.5 to 3 inches) and starts to move on its own, but you usually can't feel these movements yet. The umbilical cord has formed by this month and the placenta starts functioning. The sex organs of the baby begin to differentiate. Your doctor may be able to hear the baby's heartbeat with special instruments.
